…and we have several beautiful quilts right here in the store that we get to look at every day! Quilters Marilyn Arnsberger and Mary Lou Hart selected some of their pieces and it’s wonderful to see their handiwork; making something as detailed and intricate as these quilts takes patience and skill, not to mention many hours!

Speaking of handmade things, today we’re highlighting Extra Yarn, an excellent picture book written by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Jon Klassen. Protagonist Annabelle finds a box of yarn and begins by knitting a sweater for herself. When she is finished, she has a lot of yarn left and decides to make a sweater for her dog. Eventually, it seems that the yarn in the box isn’t ever going to run out – Annabelle ends up knitting sweaters and hats for just about everybody in town, not to mention the animals and buildings. Word spreads about Annabelle’s box of yarn, and an evil Archduke comes to see it. He offers to buy the box and when Annabelle refuses, he becomes very angry. Several of his henchmen steal the box in the middle of the night and they set sail across the very large sea. Lo and behold, however, when the Archduke opens the box upon arrival in his country, he finds it empty. He tosses it out his window in a fit of anger and wishes unhappiness on Annabelle and her whole family. A wonderful story of how simple acts of kindness and creativity can bring us closer together, the twist at the end of the book will leave you with a smile on your face. We highly recommend Extra Yarn!
